DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. * WHERE...Portions of north central and northeast New Mexico, including the following areas, in north central New Mexico, East Slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. In northeast New Mexico, Northeast Highlands. * WHEN...From Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - A disturbance crossing in rich monsoon flow will produce numerous showers and thunderstorms on Thursday afternoon and evening. Stronger storms will be capable of producing rain at rates over 1 inch per hour. Recent burn scars, and locations where the ground is already saturated from recent heavy rainfall, will at greatest risk for rapid runoff and flash flooding. - http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain.
Rain generally has a tendency to fall with less intensity over a greater period
of time, and when rainfall is more severe it is usually less sustained.
Rain is the most common form of precipitation and happens with greater frequency
depending on the season and regional influences. Cities have been shown to have
an observable effect on rainfall, due to an effect called the urban heat island.
Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
