DESCRIPTION: SVRLWX The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a * Severe Thunderstorm Warning for... The City of Charlottesville in central Virginia... Albemarle County in central Virginia... * Until 545 PM EDT. * At 506 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Free Union to near Charlottesville to near Schuyler, moving east at 20 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles. * Locations impacted include... North Garden, Hollymead, Stony Point, Flordon, Ivy, Westmoreland, Scott Stadium, Cobham, Charlottesville, Cismont, Damon, Boonesville, Campbell, Newcomb Hall, Boyd Tavern, Monticello, Keswick, Woodridge, Carrsbrook, and Earlysville.
INSTRUCTION: Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 1000 PM EDT for central Virginia.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
