AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Big Horn; Southern Big Horn; Bighorn Canyon; Pryor/Northern Bighorn Mountains; Northeastern Yellowstone; Southwestern Yellowstone

DESCRIPTION: At 802 PM MST, Doppler radar was tracking an area of heavy snow along a line from near Worden to 7 miles south of Pryor, moving east at 45 mph. Locations impacted include... Hardin, Lodge Grass, Crow Agency, Fort Smith, Ballantine, Worden, Busby, Huntley, Shepherd, Lockwood, Pryor, St. Xavier, Wyola, Pompeys Pillar, Rosebud Battlefield Park, and Tongue River Reservoir. Visibility under 1 mile and a quick 0.5" of snow should be expected.

INSTRUCTION: Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this area of snow. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads may lead to accidents. Consider delaying travel until the snow passes your location. Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Be prepared for snow or ice covered roads. Slow down and allow extra time when traveling.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless, smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud, because it is thicker.

Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain. Rain generally has a tendency to fall with less intensity over a greater period of time, and when rainfall is more severe it is usually less sustained.

Rain is the most common form of precipitation and happens with greater frequency depending on the season and regional influences. Cities have been shown to have an observable effect on rainfall, due to an effect called the urban heat island. Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of cities is 30% greater.
