AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Herkimer; Hamilton
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 7 inches. A light glaze of ice is also possible tonight. * WHERE...Hamilton and Northern Herkimer Counties. * WHEN...From 10 AM this morning to 1 AM EST Thursday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow begins late this morning or early this afternoon. Patchy light freezing drizzle is possible tonight. Any lingering precipitation changes back over to snow Wednesday morning, with additional light accumulations expected. The highest snowfall totals are expected in far northwestern Herkimer County north of Route 28.
INSTRUCTION: Slow down and use caution while traveling. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
